Inside Slant

'We're nowhere — nowhere — near where we need to be'

Tuesday, Jul 31

The verdict from new Bears offensive coordinator Mark Helfrich is in: Not good enough. Second-year quarterback Mitch Trubisky has experienced growing pains and growth from play to play. He has been intercepted in all eight full-speed practices and has mixed in plenty of quality throws with inaccurate ones. Those interceptions could be a worry for the offense — or a good sign for a defense looking to send its first player to the Pro Bowl since 2013. And the newest member of that defense? The inside linebacker drafted with the No. 8 pick? Well, he's still not here. And Vic Fangio is frustrated about it.

Deadline deal

Hours before they were set to take on the Pirates, the Cubs added to their bullpen by squeezing in a deal for veteran Brandon Kintzler before the 3 p.m. deadline. The Cubs sent Class A pitcher Jhon Romero in exchange for the Nationals reliever.

Why wait?

If only the White Sox — 31 games under .500 entering Tuesday night's game against the Royals — had two prospects crushing it in Triple A. If only. Oh, wait. They do. Eloy Jimenez and Michael Kopech continue to perform at a high level. So what are the Sox waiting for?

No excuses

After past racist, sexist and homophobic tweets by players were exposed, Cubs starter Jon Lester had some sage advice: "Spend the 5 minutes it takes to scrub your account." "Don't say stupid things in the first place." Good advice, but it misses the point: it's treating the symptom, not the disease, Shannon Ryan writes.

Many questions

Illinois coach Lovie Smith promised fans will see better results this season after a disappointing 2-10 campaign. But there are so many pressing issues for the Illini. As for fellow Big Ten members Northwestern, will Clayton Thorson be ready to start the season? And speaking of quarterbacks, will Brandon Wimbush keep his starting role at Notre Dame?

Anthem update

OK, there really isn't an update. But Bears linebacker Sam Acho is adamant that whatever the Bears decide to do Thursday, it will be a "big catalyst" behind creating change in Chicago — with the help of George McCaskey. That's a much more positive outlook than, say, Richard Sherman, who said Jerry Jones has an "old plantation mentality" about the NFL's policy.
