Let's go to the wayback machine

Friday, Sep 28

Win. Win. Nope! Win. Win. Nope! Win. Win. Nope! We'd keep doing this exercise in futility to illustrate just how long it's been since the last Bears' 3-game winning streak … but it's been FIVE YEARS and you've got a weekend to start. In that span, every team in major professional sports has enjoyed a 3-game winning streak. Just let that sink in for a minute. Or 10. For added context, Dan Wiederer compiled a list of 99 things that have also happened in that period (oh hey there, Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau and Cubs starter Jeff Samardzija). So can the Bears beat the Buccaneers Sunday to end the sadness? Cornerback Prince Amukamara has been ruled out for a depleted secondary. But oh, the swagger of the defense: "Guys are together. Guys are happy for one another. This is fun." So is this: The NFL picks are in.

Here we go now

T-minus 3 games to go and we still don't know what the playoff scenario looks like for the Cubs. Central champs? Wild-card game? Game No. 163? Currently: Ongoing vs. the Cardinals. Tonight: It's the Brewers' turn.

Photo finish

As previously reported (points up), this weekend will be wild at Wrigley (as if an earlier split with the Pirates wasn't enough). Jon Lester wants more: "It's not an arrogance. We kind of expect to win the division."

Delayed takeoff

Well, that stinks: Denzel Valentine, who had surgery in 2017 to repair a left ankle he badly sprained twice, will miss at least 1-2 weeks with a moderate sprain of that same ankle. Chandler Hutchinson, come on down!

Love game

When Stanford visits South Bend for a top-10 showdown on Saturday night (6:30 p.m., NBC), Notre Dame's main goal will be stopping running back Bryce Love: "Once you think he's down, he's gone." Sneaky guy.

Closing time

It's almost next year for the Sox — which means it's time for GM Rick Hahn to look back on what was accomplished this year: "Teach our players and hold them accountable." Today: A doubleheader in Minnesota.
