The big debut

Wednesday, Aug 1

Tonight. 6:05 p.m. WGN. Cole Hamels, wearing No. 35, will make his Cubs debut against the Pirates at PNC Park. No pressure new guy, but the Cubs have enjoyed great success these last few Augusts — 19-9 in 2015, 22-6 in 2016 and 17-12 in 2017. Note: Today is Aug. 1, for you non-calendar lovers out there. Also new guy: Try to go deep into the game — Jon Lester lasted just 5 innings in a 5-4 loss and that bullpen is tired. So you've got your marching orders, new guy — have fun out there! But before we go: Your Daily Darvish.

Winners and losers

The dust has settled from the trade deadline. So who did well (the Pirates) and who did not do well (Cardinals)? Locally, the Cubs picked up a reliever who married in Vegas and the Sox traded some international money.

All about Roquan

Rookie Roquan Smith has missed 10 training camp practices and counting. David Haugh writes that the Bears need to blink first and end this stalemate — which would be just fine with defensive guy Vic Fangio

Oops.

Tim Anderson got benched by manager Rick Renteria in last night's 4-2 loss for not running out a low liner: An atypical "lapse." Let that be a lesson to you, prospect Zack Collins. Tonight: More (7:10 p.m., NBCSCH).

Tweet report

Jon Lester clarified his thoughts, re: other players' offensive tweets, saying "in no way, shape or form did I want to make those guys out to be a victim of anything." Yesterday: Nationals' Trea Turner tearfully apologized.

Etc.

Some news and notes: The 2018 Bahamas Bowl will be sponsored by Elk Grove Village. Well, sure. … We tell you when to draft rookies for fantasy football (we're so nice!) … and a bad, bad loss for Serena Williams.
