'It means a lot for the city of Chicago'

Monday, Mar 5

The 28-5 Loyola Ramblers are headed to the NCAA tournament for the 1st time since 1985. No wondering. No hemming. No hawing. Loyola won the Missouri Valley Conference tournament to secure an automatic bid: "This is what we've been dreaming about," Ben Richardson said, wearing a snipped-down net around his neck. "We knew we had a lot of potential, a lot of pieces this year." The rebuilt Ramblers have 6 players from Illinois on the roster — including tournament MVP Donte Ingram. Loyola's success as the only team from the state that will be dancing puts other programs under the microscope, writes David Haugh. Like Illinois, who today lost a transferring 2017 Mr. Basketball Mark Smith. Or Northwestern, whose follow-up to last year's glory was a big thud. Or DePaul, who has a team that plays in that new downtown arena. Let the bracketology commence!

News you can use

The NFL combine is over. What did we learn? A. The Bears' receiver search begins with Calvin Ridley. B. No pressure/all pressure Ryan Pace. And C. Equanimeous St. Brown can keep his eyes open for 15 seconds. Useful!

Yip, there it is

Just when you thought it was safe to throw from the mound to 1B, here comes Jon Lester: "We're working on the Jordan-to-Pippen bounce pass." As for Tyler Chatwood, he's trying to make fans forget about Jake Arrieta.

That's new

Batting leadoff for the White Sox — Yoan Moncada? "I think I can take advantage of my strengths in that spot in the order." Maybe that's why Paul Konerko said these young kids will make "some noise this year" …

Good jobs

Bobby Portis and ex-Bull Nikola Mirotic are enjoying career best seasons. One could say, they've rolled with the punches this season. Yeahhhhh, sorry. Had to. Tonight: Bulls try to out-shoot the Celtics (7 p.m., NBCSCH).

What's the point?

Welcome to a March of Hawks games that don't matter. Weird, no? Coach Q & Co. will therefore play the next 16 games with a nod to the future. But hey, is anyone worried about Duncan Keith? Cuz Steve Rosenbloom is.
