You'll find another strong field on nominees today in the new Tweet of the Week poll. I really like "Mueller's yarn and thumbtack budget must be through the roof," by @scottsimpson and am predicting that another one of my favorites, "It is a truth universally acknowledged that a white man in possession of an opinion must be in want of a podcast" by @ThatAdamKid will finish last. Last week's winner was "You know who doesn't sleep like a baby? Babies," which turned out to have been stolen from columnist Joel Stein. People steal tweets all the time, and I've never heard a good excuse.
Today's column, West Virginia teachers' victory gives hope to sagging labor movement is certainly timely, as their wildcat strike settled yesterday. As many have pointed out, that job action would have been a top story all over the country if it weren't for the ever-stunning antics of President Donald Trump. West Virginia teachers have shown that organized workers can still have clout in the inevitable post-Janus America if their cause is just and their resolution strong. That idea has already spread to Oklahoma, also a right-to-freeload state, where public school teachers earn even less on average than they do in West Virginia. On Thursday, the Oklahoma Education Association union is reportedly planning to announce a statewide-shutdown strategy. If the green shoots in the hills of West Virginia flower on the great plains, look out. Labor may not be dead yet.
In contrast, Sunday's column Yes, I 'ghost' my dog. But no, I am not a monster, was timeless. I expect to be getting hate mail on this one for many years, When the time came to say goodbye to Hazel, I didn't. I merely turned and, as I always do whether I'm leaving for an hour, a day or a week, walked away without looking at or acknowledging her in any way. I do this because I respect her canine nature. I accept her inability to understand such concepts as "soon," "in a few hours," "in a couple of days" or, for that matter, "work," "vacation," "to the store" or anything one might say upon taking leave of a person. And I also respect that she, like most dogs, is a tuning fork for human emotion.
Last Friday's column Democrats' best choice for attorney general is Fairley obvious, let you know how I'm voting in the Democratic attorney general primary. The field is large and stacked with good candidates, not a fruitcake or nitwit in the bunch. Sharon Fairley, however, makes the best case for herself. She earned an undergraduate degree from Princeton, an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and a law degree from the University of Chicago. She's a former federal prosecutor, Illinois assistant attorney general and Chicago deputy Inspector general. In 2015, Mayor Rahm Emanuel named her to head the Independent Police Review Authority (now the Civilian Office of Police Accountability), where she earned high marks. She projects a steely confidence and sharp intellect, showing the sort of commanding presence you'd want in an attorney general.
She's lagging in the polls against candidates with more party support, but I thought I'd pipe up. By the way, the Mincing Rascals podcast just keeps getting better and better! Each episode is more timely than the last is, if played today. Search us out on your podcast catcher or your favorite search engine. Subscribe. Enjoy. Spread the word. |
