Inside Slant

Merry Mitchmas

Friday, Dec 22

A tip for Mitch Trubisky if he wants to avoid getting coal in his stocking: Beat the 0-14 Browns on Christmas Eve at home (noon, CBS). If not, the rookie can kiss that brand new scooter goodbye. Here's a dubious stat: The Bears are 0-7 in games in which they have been favored under John Fox … and they are favored by 6.5 points on Sunday. Oh boy. Something's gotta give. Or someone's gotta go.

The streak is over

Nikola Mirotic is no longer is undefeated. Denzel Valentine's desperation heave was no good and the Bulls lost to the Cavs 115-112. "We should have pulled this one out," said Lauri Marrkanen, who tallied 25 points.

The streak is over, Part 2

The iron was unkind to the Hawks — and so were the Stars. A 4-0 loss snapped a 5-game winning streak: "We just got embarrassed." And of greater concern, where in the world is Carmen Sandiego, aka Richard Panik?

A sports TV legend

Broadcaster Dick Enberg, who died yesterday, was at his best when ceding the spotlight to others and the events he covered, whether it was the 1985 Bears in the Super Bowl or John Wooden's UCLA basketball juggernaut.

I-L-L ...

4-star lineman Verdis Brown is headed to Illinois: "I wanted to give them hope." Over at Notre Dame, a 3rd player has been suspended for the Jan. 1 Citrus Bowl. Wonder what kind of pregame meal the Irish will have …

Etc.

What's in a name? The minor-league baseball team in Joliet will play at "The Cards Against Humanity Baseball Place." Catchy! Also: LaVar Ball wants his own basketball league and don't ask Ezekiel Elliot about Cabo.
