Inside Slant

That's more like it

Thursday, Dec 14

Yesterday, we implored the Cubs or White Sox to turn up the heat at the winter meetings. Enter: Rick Hahn, clearly an avid Inside Slant reader. The White Sox made an "impressive offer" for Orioles All-Star third baseman Manny Machado, which seems a little confusing since the team has an eye to the future. "The goal remains putting us in the best position for the long term," Hahn said today, adding "We may take some calculated risks along the way." Even if the deal doesn't come to fruition, we certainly appreciate the distraction. Because, while necessary, the boring Cubs just keep adding arms to their staff. Today: A 2-year deal for reliever Steve Cishek. Theo Epstein said he didn't think the Cubs would do anything else, but added "things change quickly with one phone call." Do it. Do it. Do it.

Streakin'

Have you heard? Nikola Mirotic is back. And so are the Bulls, who have won 4 straight. "Some of you thought I was joking. I was very, very serious. I told you we were going to be 4-0." OK, tell us the winning lottery numbers ...

Campus elites

From Ray Meyer to Bill Self to Kelly Amonte Hiller: Ranking the 30 greatest all-time college coaches in Illinois. Teddy Greenstein tackles the Northwestern debate: Pat Fitzgerald or Chris Collins? Oh, the humanity.

Carrying the load

Jordan Howard's lingering shoulder injury has caused him some pain — but not as much pain as he's inflicted on opposing defenses. Synergy! But what about those wide receivers? More targets, less talk says Kendall Wright.

Playoffs?!?!!?

It's (fantasy football) playoff time! Will Nick Foles keep the Eagles' offense afloat? Should you start Packers' Aaron Rodgers? We have those answers. As for whether the owners and Roger Goodell are unified, we don't.

What's in a name?

Jonathan Toews, talk about Alex DeBrincat. "I had to think about who Alex was for a second. I've heard 'Kitty' or 'Brinker.'" Oh fine. What about missing the "Bread Man"? Tonight: On the road vs. Jets (7 p.m., NBCSCH).
