Extreme weather dangers often overlooked as Cook County reports 26 cold-related deaths in 2017

Illinois is consistently in top 5 states nationwide for cold-related deaths per year, according to CDC data covering 1999 to 2016. In 2017, the cold claimed the lives of a range of victims across the city and suburbs: an elderly couple in the dining room of a Chicago home with a faulty furnace, a homeless man at a bus stop, a woman in Bellwood who collapsed in her backyard taking out a bag of garbage.
