A powerful winter storm that could bring up to 14 inches of snow to some areas was bearing down on Chicago and the suburbs late Thursday, leading city and transportation officials from around the region to sound an alarm over deteriorating road conditions while public transit officials braced for the worst.
Chicago Public Schools called off classes for Friday, joining a host of suburban districts who decided on a snow day for students.
