Fired up

Monday, Apr 30

The last 4 months have been a blur for Bears GM Ryan Pace. Firing John Fox. Hiring Matt Nagy. Keeping Vic Fangio. Investing in free agency. Studying for the draft. But now, the prep is over and Pace is "fired up" about his 7-player draft class: "The whole building is energized. There's just such a positive vibe around here." A lot of those vibes are centered around Roquan Smith, the natural leader from a tiny town in Georgia who will be the defense's heartbeat, writes Rich Campbell and Dan Wiederer. Our Bears duo discussed Smith's arrival as well as the silliest draft questions on a new episode of the podcast (subscribe now!). Also in the fold: Center James Daniels, receiver Anthony Miller, linebacker Joel Iyiegbuniwe (we spellchecked his name 5 times), defensive lineman Bilal Nichols, linebacker Kylie Fitts and receiver Javon Wims — and a lengthy list of undrafted free agents. And yet, Steve Rosenbloom still points out one glaring hole. Alas.

Report cards

NFL draft grades are in for the NFC (Bears got a "B" for Bears) and AFC (Bills got a "B" for Bills). And now, a closer look at the NFC North, including 1 team who drafted 11 players (wow way to share, Packers).

Heat wave

The temps aren't the only thing heating up at Wrigley … Cubs swept the Brewers in a 4-game set. Kris Bryant is back. The starting pitching is good again. Oh, happy days. Tonight: The Rockies (6:05 p.m., NBCSCH).

Asked and answered

Is the Cubs lineup set for good now? Why isn't Addison Russell hitting home runs in bunches? Does it ever stop being fun to be Javier Baez? Does longtime clubhouse guy Yosh Kawano have a Cubs' World Series ring?

Sports are fun

Tim Anderson hit a leadoff HR and was excited about said leadoff HR. Big mistake, per those pesky unwritten rules: "They're trying to take the fun out of baseball." Gah. Stop. Stat sheet: White Sox go 3-2 vs. Royals.

Etc.

The Cavaliers won Game 7 — but, shock of all shocks, it wasn't all LeBron James all the time … the Hawks (and the rest of the NHL) are on the clock … and a really big wave in Portugal produced a really gnarly world record.
