Let's gooooo

Friday, Apr 27

Roquan Smith, welcome aboard: "I'm ready to give the city of Chicago everything I have in me." The Bears opted for defense over offense in the first round, picking up the linebacker with a "great burst." And c'mon, it should be a rule that the Butkus Award winner has to play in Chicago. Bears. Butkus. Ditka. Smith said it's "going to be insane" to play alongside his former college teammate Leonard Floyd. Fun fact: At No. 9, Floyd was the highest-drafted linebacker in Georgia history — until last night, when Smith went No. 8. Another fun fact: GM Ryan Pace tried to trade up later in the first round, to no avail. Let's see what he has up his sleeve in Round 2 and 3 tonight (and 4-7 on Saturday). On the to-do list: Edge rusher, receiver and offensive line. Better charge your phone — it's gonna be a busy few days.

Early returns

Jets, Ravens and Bills were first-round winners. Seahawks, Cowboys and Browns (is Baker Mayfield code for Johnny Manziel?) were first-round losers. Also winners: The Notre Dame duo who both went Top 10.

Bad bad bad it's all bad

Kris Bryant is out for a 4th straight game. Anthony Rizzo's 150-game errorless streak is over. Yu Darvish isn't acting like Yu Darvish. For the love of Clark the Cub, what's good? Oh, a 1-0 win over the Brewers. Carry on.

'Progressing positively'

White Sox's Danny Farquhar "has taken a couple of light walks" less than one week after surgery for a ruptured aneurysm. Another sad note: Rick Renteria is away from the team to attend his mother's funeral in Texas.

Tank me out to the ballgame

Let's check in on the MLB's race to the bottom. Early leaders include both the White Sox and Royals. For the record: Sox beat KC last night. Today: Just one game, with a doubleheader tomorrow (7:15 p.m., NBCSCH).

What else is on?

The Blackhawks haven't won the Stanley Cup in 3 seasons (gasp!). Besides losing games, they've also lost local TV viewers: Down 45% in 3 seasons, a loss of 71,708 homes. A tip: This won't help things either, NHL.
