New year, same Bears

Tuesday, Jan 2

The Bears, to the surprise of no one, fired head coach John Fox on Monday morning. The Bears then, to the surprise of many, extended the contract of GM Ryan Pace. Both were 14-34 in 3 seasons. Huh? Where's the accountability, asks David Haugh? Pace is now tasked with hiring the franchise's 16th head coach — with input, er, "collaboration" from rookie QB Mitch Trubisky. The Bears, in theory, will lean toward an offensive-minded coach to take care of their franchise quarterback. Who might that be? Here are 14 possible candidates — with 4 of them likely interviewing soon. And here's a non-update update on the defensive-minded Vic Fangio from Pace: "I have a lot of respect for Vic." Cool. Sames. Pace wouldn't entertain much coaching speculation at yesterday's press conference, saying "We'll be competitive, and we'll get the right guy for the Bears." What could go wrong?

Ch-ch-changes

The NFC North was busy yesterday: The Bears and Lions fired their coaches, and the Packers shuffled their front office. What's up, Vikings? Elsewhere in the NFL: Raiders, Colts and Cardinals have coaching vacancies too.

Not a great way to start the year

New Year's Day hangover? The Bulls' 7-game home winning streak ended last night with a disappointing 124-120 loss to the Trail Blazers in OT. But help is on the way, in the form of Zach LaVine. Soon. We think. Probably?

Lost & found

The Hawks have lost 4 games, a starting goalie and a 2nd-line center during this 6-game road trip that ends tomorrow. But they are still in the playoff hunt, and everyone's New Year's resolutions are intact. So, that's something.

A grand Grandaddy

102 points in 2 OTs: The Rose Bowl, aka "The Grandaddy of Them All" was rocking last night as Georgia outlasted Oklahoma, setting up a championship date vs. Alabama. And look, Notre Dame won a New Year's bowl!

B1G letdown?

Last year, 7 Big Ten teams went dancing. This season? ESPN's bracketologist (hey, it's a living) says only 4. Is the Big Ten a mid-major now? On the court, conference play revs up again. As does NBA draft speculation.
