Casting a spell

Friday, Jan 19

Along with new head coach Matt Nagy, new offensive coordinator Mark Helfrich is hoping to turn the Bears' offense from drab to fab. The recipe? A pinch of the "chaos situation" from Oregon, a dash of the Air Coryell scheme and a smidgen of West Coast offense. Get ready to hit the books, rookie QB Mitch Trubisky: "He's going to be confused, and our job is to dwindle that down to think about one thing." Helfrich, defensive coordinator Vic Fangio and special teams coordinator Chris Tabor donned their blue and orange best to meet the press yesterday. One question not asked: NFL playoff and Super Bowl picks. Maybe next time.

Getting closer

34 of the Cubs' 36 spring training games will be aired on various broadcast mediums (better luck next time, Snapchat). Coming soon to Wrigley Field: Fall Out Boy in September and Def Leppard and Journey in July.

Final tally

On Wednesday at 2 p.m., the newest members of the Hall of Fame will be announced. Here are the ballots from our Mark Gonzales and Paul Sullivan. The voting process gets more attention every year — for better or worse.

Zero days off

No one will log longer hours at these Olympics than Matt and Becca Hamilton. The siblings from Wisconsin are curlers — and they will be on the ice for 50+ hours come February. Track our local Olympians here.

I-L-L ...

… where-did-all-the-quarterbacks-go-N-I? Jeff George Jr. and Chayce Crouch are out, leaving Illinois with only one quarterback on the roster. That's not going to make the transition to a new offense easier for Lovie Smith & Co.
