As 2018 opens, I want to take a few moments to thank you for your support. You make it possible for us to do the work we do.

The Tribune newsroom devotes a lot of time, expense and energy to breaking news, protecting your interests, serving as a check on government power, telling the stories that entertain you and connecting you with your community.

A few highlights from the past year:

•	An unprecedented analysis by the Tribune of millions of property tax records revealed that the Cook County’s assessment system is fundamentally unfair, putting a heavy burden on small businesses and homeowners in poorer communities. The series has prompted broad demands for assessment reform.
•	A Tribune investigation revealed that Illinois had failed for 10 years to test newborns for Krabbe disease, a catastrophic illness that can be treated only if it is detected early in a child’s life. In the aftermath of our reporting, Illinois started screening for Krabbe in December.
•	A Tribune investigation exposed problems at the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services that left children in grave danger. Illinois lawmakers have responded with their own investigation and the state has instituted significant changes at the agency.
•	We offered you a mix of critics and columnists in Chicago that no other news organization could match, from Mary Schmich to John Kass to Heidi Stevens to Chris Jones. They wrote not just with flair but with warmth, commitment and an unflinching honesty.
•	Our work was recognized with the highest honors in journalism. The Tribune’s E. Jason Wambsgans won the 2017 Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography. Tribune staffers were recognized as Pulitzer Prize finalists for Public Service, Investigative Reporting and Commentary and won several other national awards.
