Cubs look at big picture regarding Addison Russell, Joe Ricketts

Wednesday, Feb 13

There would be no sidestepping controversy Tuesday. Cubs President Theo Epstein addressed head-on Addison Russell's domestic violence suspension as well as ownership patriarch Joe Ricketts' racist emails. Regarding Russell, Epstein said: "We'll continue to be transparent with you and our fans about everything we're doing to try to attack this problem with domestic violence." Epstein also preached a message of tolerance after calling Ricketts' emails "ugly" and "disgusting." On a less serious note, is this lack of free-agent signings so close to the regular season the new normal? Meanwhile, Mark Gonzales shares his observations from Day 1 of Cubs spring training.

Easy decision

White Sox thief/center fielder Adam Engel once turned down a scholarship offer to play football at Wisconsin, so he understands Kyler Murray's choice to pursue NFL dreams. Good thing Eloy Jimenez is at Camelback Ranch.

We glove you, Manny

Somehow, after all this time, Manny Machado watch kicked up a notch with Rawlings' tweet of Machado's black-and-white gloves for 2019. We need an app to keep up to date with all things Machado, Phil Rosenthal writes.

Hope's still alive

So much for that 7-game winning streak. The Blackhawks took one on the chin Tuesday, losing 6-3 at Boston. The good news: The playoffs are no further from reach than when the day began.

Nowhere to go but up

Otto Porter Jr. is making a good impression with his new Bulls teammates. "He doesn't even really know any of the plays," Zach LaVine said of Porter, adding "He's been doing great." Brace yourselves, rest of the NBA.

True to herself

When her Wisconsin teammates stand for the national anthem, Marsha Howard sits alone on the bench, closes her eyes and bows her head. "I'm going to speak up about things that are harming my culture and my people."

No one saw that, right?

DePaul has come a long way in a short time. There might even be an NIT bid in the Blue Demons' near future. Which is why it's best to brush off what happened Tuesday against Marquette, Shannon Ryan writes.
