Inside Slant

Sunny days ahead?

Wednesday, Apr 11

10 games in and the Cubs are 5-5. No use worrying now — save that for April 29. That's when the Cubs should know whether their early inconsistency has decided to stick around longer than expected (it's also when a series vs. the Brewers wraps up). Yesterday: More fizzle than sizzle in the home opener. "I'm a guy who keeps warming up," said the recently engaged Javier Baez. "I'm just trying to see the ball, hit the ball and make good contact." Also yesterday: Our baseball guys did a live show from Wrigley, along with 2 competitive eaters. It was … something.

Moving on up

The days of spending $2 for a coffee and a fried egg sandwich at Yum-Yum Donuts is long gone at Wrigley Field. Now? New dugouts. An ATM in the visitors' tunnel. And the swanky American Airlines 1914 Club.

Just watch

Opening day has passed. The home opener is over. What's the next thing for Sox fans to look forward to? Hint: His name is Michael Kopech. Yesterday: A 5th straight home loss. Today: Game ongoing, in warmer conditions!

Match game

Cameron Meredith is geaux-ing to play for the Saints next season, as the Bears didn't match the offer sheet for the wide receiver. Receiver you say? Here's a look at the guys available in the NFL draft (it's a big business).

The game he loves

Shawn Respert, the Bulls director of player development, has a story to tell. He's just reluctant to share it for the same selfless reasons he kept his illness quiet. Tonight: Season ova (7 p.m., NBCSCH). Holiday. Celebrate.

Etc.

April showers bring spring football game cancellations for Northwestern. Elsewhere in sports-land, Kevin Durant wants out of his Warriors contract (so he can get back in) and this hockey tribute is heartbreaking.
