Monday, May 7

At 12:54 a.m. Monday, David Haugh writes, the Cubs' season officially hit crisis mode, a designation much easier to declare after the Cardinals celebrated their second straight walk-off victory over the alleged team to beat in the division. There was plenty of blame to go around after the loss. And Joe Maddon is shaking things up again for tonight's game against the Marlins, with Anthony Rizzo sitting and Albert Almora, Jr back in the leadoff spot.

Sox prep for draft

The Chicago White Sox haven't drafted a high school player in the first round since 2012, and it would be surprising if the trend ends this year. The debate is more likely on whether the Sox will add to their deep stable of pitching prospects or select a hitter who could contribute soon. James Shields was a symbol of hope in the Sox's latest loss. The Sox start a two-game series against the Pirates on Tuesday.

Hawk, Wimpy

If Sunday really was the final broadcast together for White Sox announcer Ken "Hawk" Harrelson and Tom "Wimpy" Paciorek, at least they went out with a bang.

Kane leads Team USA

The United States beat Germany 3-0 to stay unbeaten and Russia shut out a third straight opponent at the world ice hockey championship on Monday.

Fire can't stop Atlanta

Ezequiel Barco and Josef Martinez scored, and Atlanta United extended its unbeaten streak to eight with a 2-1 win over the Fire on Saturday night at Toyota Park.

Justify's ownership team took home $1.24 million after the favorite won Saturday's Kentucky Derby, the $500,000 they shelled out for the colt in 2016 looking like money well spent.

Stupidest streak in sports

If the Caps beat the Penguins on Monday night in Pittsburgh - or if they lose that game but beat the Penguins on Wednesday night in D.C. - two things will happen.
