A San Francisco treat?

Friday, Dec 21

A win in Week 16 won't clinch the Bears a 1st-round bye, but it could lock up (at worst) the No. 3 seed in the playoffs. So, and this is just our opinion, they should beat the 49ers on Sunday (3:05 p.m., Fox). There's storylines aplenty to watch: A dominant defense lead by the shrewdest of shrewd defensive minds in Vic Fangio (or is that future Cubs bench coach Vic Fangio?), a rookie making a big impact on that defense in Roquan Smith, and the always fun kicking battle between Robbie Gould vs. Robbie Gould's replacement. It's no wonder Bears playoff tickets sold out in about 2 hours yesterday. And finally, this holiday weekend: Pop on the latest Bear Download podcast episode, drive safe — and give Grandma a big hug from us!

No coal for him

"How much luckier can a guy be?" Pat Hughes received an early present yesterday: A multiyear contract extension. Hughes, 63, has been the radio voice of the Cubs since 1996. Now, about beefing up that bullpen …

A new pair of Sox?

It's like when you think there's egg nog left in the fridge and then there's no egg nog left in the fridge. That's could be the reality facing White Sox fans if/when Manny Machado or Bryce Harper signs elsewhere. Bah humbug.

Surprise gift

The Blackhawks, previously winners of ONE road game in regulation all season, won in Dallas last night — a 5-2 defeat of the Stars. It's a Christmas miracle! So that makes them 2-13 away from the UC. Trending up!

Santa by their man?

Is management still committed to Jim Boylen (ya know, after the near-mutiny and cratering of the offense)? K.C. Johnson answers this — and more! In Bulls injury news: Bobby Portis is out 2-4 weeks. Bah humbug again.

Thanks, Chicago

The year in Chicago sports was one of firings (John Fox, Joel Quenneville and Fred Hoiberg) and goodbyes (Stan Mikita, Yosh Kawano and Tex Winter) — and one really good Bears team. Here's a look back at 2018.
