The year in review

From Publisher & Editor-in-Chief Bruce Dold
At the Chicago Tribune, we approach the end of the year with the pride we have in our good work and with gratitude to you, our readers, for helping to make it possible.
The support of subscribers has never been more important to the ability of journalists to do their work.
It was a momentous year, and we brought it alive for our readers when it was triumphant and when it was troubling. From a worst-to-first run by the Bears to an exposé of Chicago Public Schools, the Tribune produced world-class journalism about our local communities.
Here are some examples of work that made a difference, and that you made possible:
Students Betrayed
Nobody was keeping track of how often sexual abuse was reported
in Chicago Public Schools (CPS) — not even the school system itself. In the
“Betrayed” investigation, the Tribune undertook an unprecedented census of
abuse of children in the schools, revealed shortcomings in the way CPS
handled complaints by students, and prompted broad reforms aimed at
protecting children.
Danger in the air
The Tribune revealed the extent to which a medical services facility called Sterigenics was releasing known carcinogens into the air around suburban schools and homes.
75 shot, 3 charged
Our reporters are exploring the challenges that face Chicago police through a close examination of a single weekend in which 75 were shot, but only three people have been charged in those shootings.
Incredible Transformation?
Just steps from the Magnificent Mile, a 60-acre riverfront development provided the opportunity to create vibrant and interconnected public spaces as well as great architecture. In a sweeping report, Tribune architecture critic Blair Kamin revealed why and how developers and city planners let that promise slip away at Cityfront Center.
#MeToo and a megachurch
Leaders of Willow Creek Community Church initially rejected allegations of inappropriate conduct by its founding pastor, Bill Hybels. But after a Tribune investigation, Hybels resigned from the megachurch and leaders conducted a deep re-examination of their own response.
A season of promise
The Tribune sports department has provided the best coverage in town of a first-year coach, a young quarterback, a throwback defense and an immensely entertaining Chicago Bears team.
Thank you for your support. We're looking forward to sharing 2019 with you!
