Otto-cadabra! Bulls conjure trade with Wizards

Thursday, Feb 7

The United Center figured to be the center of NBA drama Wednesday, given that Anthony Davis and the Pelicans were in town and the Chicago native had been jonesing to be traded. Then the Bulls went and blew up their own roster, sending Bobby Portis and Jabari Parker to the Wizards in exchange for 25-year-old forward Otto Porter Jr. "I tried to do everything I could to show (the fans) that I appreciated the city," Parker said as he left the building. Looking at the big picture, K.C. Johnson writes that the move is a sign management isn't convinced it could land a player better than Porter in free agency. Circling back to Wednesday's game, the Bulls dropped their ninth straight at home, tying a franchise record. The good news? Forbes has the Bulls as the fourth-most valuable NBA franchise, at a cool $2.9 billion.

End of an era

The Cubs are on WGN-9. That's just the way it is and has been for 72 years. But 2019 could be a tearjerker, Paul Sullivan writes, as the Cubs enter their final season with the network that stuck by them through thick and (mostly) thin.

Pick one already

MLB is considering making the designated hitter rule universal across both leagues. Really, what took so long, Phil Rosenthal asks. Guess we'll see how things shake out as teams shape up for spring training.

Don't be a hater

Yes, the Blackhawks are suddenly back in contention for a playoff spot. No, you — as a fan — shouldn't be upset about that. Jimmy Greenfield explains why.

Offseason questions

The NFL season is over, meaning it's time to start asking all the free agency questions so Brad Biggs can answer them. All of them. Even that one about Josh Bellamy's special teams prowess.

He's the boss — of himself

Wednesday was national signing day, with locals and local teams making their moves. Also making moves was Illinois coach Lovie Smith, who named himself defensive coordinator and promoted son Miles to linebackers coach.
