Joe Ricketts apologizes after racist emails published

Tuesday, Feb 5

A series of emails obtained and published by Splinter News on Monday appears to show Joe Ricketts, the patriarch of the family that owns the Cubs, sharing and endorsing racist jokes and conspiracy theories. Ricketts and his son and team Chairman Tom Ricketts issued separate statements regarding the emails after they were posted. Islamophobia was prevalent in many of the emails. Others mentioned the faith of former President Barack Obama. "I deeply regret and apologize for some of the exchanges I had in my emails," Joe Ricketts said in a statement. "... I strongly believe that bigoted ideas are wrong."

Wait nearly over

Spring training is almost here. How does the Cubs roster stack up? And what role will Tyler Chatwood play this season? Mark Gonzales answers your Cubs questions.

Super Bowl hot list

Let's hear it for, among other things, Gladys Knight, "Face the Nation" and ASMR. Let's honor a moment of silence for White Russians and Romostradamus.

No time to hibernate

There will be no need to go into football withdrawal now that the Super Bowl is over, David Haugh writes. Not with Bulls drama, a Hawks playoff chase (sort of) and baseball around the corner. Oh, and the NFL combine!

Shopping block

You might know it as the worst-kept secret in the NBA, but the Bulls are shopping Jabari Parker and Robin Lopez ahead of Thursday's trade deadline. Ah, trades, like the one that landed Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot.

No waive, Jose

Is defenseman Brent Seabrook's Blackhawks career coming to an end? Not yet. The 33-year-old denied a report he was asked to waive his no-trade clause.

Redbirds soaring

Loyola's road struggles have opened a door for Illinois State to join them at the top of the MVC — and the top of Shannon Ryan's power rankings. The Illini, on a roll themselves, have a new radio home.

One to forget

This one might sting more than others. Not only did Northwestern lose its third straight game Monday, but that defeat came at the hands of Penn State, which had not yet managed a Big Ten win all season.
