Inside Slant

Mirror, mirror, on the wall

Thursday, Jan 31

The Bears beat the Rams this season, so by transitive property the Bears are in the Super Bowl, right? Well … Sure, it stinks seeing a team with an energetic young coach with swagger and a promising young quarterback on football's biggest stage. But the Bears and Rams comparisons actually go one step further: Daring general managers. If Matt Nagy and Mitch Trubisky are to Sean McVay and Jared Goff, then it stands to reason Ryan Pace is to Les Snead, whose solid moves and wise choices turned the Rams into NFC champions. Not saying it's the Spider-Man meme, but it's kinda the Spider-Man meme. Besides the astute hiring of Nagy, one thing Pace knocked out of the park was drafting Roquan Smith, who led the Bears with 122 tackles as a rookie. Not bad.

Cody words

The Cody Parkey questions keep rolling in (when is he getting cut?). But there's another non-Parkey one Brad Biggs answered: Is everyone giving Khalil Mack a pass for not getting a sack against the Eagles?

All eyes on Rose

Stadium, the sports network co-owned by Bulls Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf, released the trailer for "Pooh: The Derrick Rose Story." Here's what we learned about the 100-minute documentary about the former Bulls star.

Warm, fuzzy feeling

How good were the Bulls on Wednesday? Well, good enough to beat the Heat in the second of back-to-back games and earn a day off. Also good: Duke's Zion Williamson (understatement). So says Zach LaVine.

Addition by subtraction

Nicolas Beaudin was the final player Canada cut from its World Junior Championships squad. Not that the Blackhawks prospect let it get him down: Over his last 11 games, he has two goals and 15 assists.

Cold? What cold?

Despite absurd conditions, some fans stood in line for five hours to see Loyola play Wednesday night. Their reward: A one-point Ramblers victory — and free beanies.

Better luck next time

DePaul lost to Villanova on Wednesday. Which should surprise no one, considering the Blue Demons now have lost 18 straight to the Wildcats. Yep, you read that right. Not a great night for the Fighting Illini, either.
