Attorneys for House Speaker Michael Madigan's 2016 opponent Jason Gonzales have placed the powerful Southwest Side Democrat and his operatives under oath in recent months as part of a civil lawsuit alleging one of Chicago politics' oldest and most effective tricks: putting sham candidates on the ballot to siphon away votes from a more formidable foe.
The Tribune obtained never-before-seen depositions in the case that establish ties between Madigan's organization and two other candidates in his 2016 Illinois House contest. But the depositions also show the speaker and his aides proved adept at providing short, clipped answers that do little to reveal motive or method.
