No need for tears anymore

Tuesday, Jan 29

Toward the end of the 2014 season, the Bears were in bad shape. Late that year, then-offensive coordinator Aaron Kromer threw Jay Cutler under the bus anonymously, then admitted it was him, then made a tearful apology before being ushered out with the rest of Marc Trestman's regime. The Bears have moved on since then and are on the upswing. And Kromer? As fate would have it, he's on the Rams staff and looking for a Super Bowl ring Sunday against the Patriots. "People make mistakes and you grow," he told Brad Biggs on Monday. The Bears defense obviously is thriving, particularly since acquiring Khalil Mack to make their group of outside linebackers ultra-formidable. On Tuesday, Matt Nagy hired a new inside linebackers coach: Mark DeLeone. Rich Campbell and Dan Wiederer combed through Pro Bowl-adjacent highlights and Bears offseason moves in the latest Bear Download podcast. That includes kicker-related news, which also came up at the Super Bowl. Speaking of the big game, "Romostradamus" has unveiled his prediction for the final score.

Icing the kickers

Jay Feely ran through all the available top kickers for the Bears, but kept asking himself, "Why didn't they just keep Robbie Gould?" At least they have Bearman's continued success ...

Yep, they're gonna play

Polar vortex or not, DePaul and Loyola are still playing basketball games as scheduled Wednesday. And they're rewarding courageous fans with perks.

This weather stinks

With historically cold temperatures bearing down on the area, it's as good a time as any to rank the 12 most unforgettable weather-related events in Chicago sports history.

Free(zing) agents

There are big-name free agents — cough, Machado and Harper, cough — who have been linked to the Cubs or White Sox. All seven are still unsigned. Meanwhile, they can listen to our baseball podcast until they get picked up.

Sour Apple

The Bulls' trip to New York to face the Nets on Tuesday ended in their fourth straight loss. Bright side: recently acquired guard Wayne Selden is doing his best to make a lasting impression — especially on defense.

So many misses

Northwestern failed a tough road test on Tuesday, losing 70-52 to No. 21 Maryland. A big reason why: The Wildcats shot just 5-for-23 from 3-point range.

Hot on the ice

Blackhawks prospect Adam Boqvist has been on a roll: The 18-year-old defenseman has 34 points in 32 games and is in the top 10 in the OHL among defensemen in goals and points. But is he ready for the NHL?
